What is counseling?

As defined by the American Counseling Association, "Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Professional counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health."

Who might seek counseling?

Any person who is interested in improving their sense of emotional well-being.  This may be evidenced by a reduction of symptoms, such as depression or anxiety.  It may also be evidenced by improvement in interpersonal relationships or better performance in work or school.  Deborah works with women, men, gender neutral persons and adolescents.  She has experience with a wide range of ages, gender identity, sexual identity, religions, nationalities and ethnicities. 

Which insurances are accepted?

A core belief of Deborah's is that everyone should have access to quality mental health care, especially those who are using their health insurance to cover the expense.  Deborah is in-network with CareFirst BC/BS and Magellan.  Deborah accepts many other insurances on an out-of-network basis and frequently can submit claims on behalf of clients.


What is needed for video-based counseling?

To set an appointment with Deborah, you would need to meet the following three provisions:

(1)  Have access to a laptop or desktop computer with a camera (please note that smart phones and tablets are not sufficient). 

(2)  Have a private, disruption free space for the duration of the session.

(3)  Your residence must be in either Washington, DC or Virginia.


What style of counseling does Deborah offer?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the foundation of Deborah's work with clients.  CBT offers clear focus on goals and symptom relief through tools that are evidence based through publically available research.  Deborah's interpersonal focus allows her to consider the full bio-psycho-social-spiritual dimensions of each client and tailor work to the individual's needs.  Deborah believes in collaboration with a client's treatment team, with the full knowledge and inclusion of the client in the communication.  This approach empowers a client to accomplish the goals they set forth.
